Spray foam stripped off a Norfolk bungalow, and the roof put back properly

Closed cell foam sprayed straight onto the underside of the tiles, so nothing in the roof was visible and nothing dried out. We took the covering off from the outside, cleared every bit of it, checked the timber and re-covered the roof on new membrane and battens.

Why it had to come off from the outside

Closed cell foam bonds to the underside of the tiles and to the felt, so scraping at it from inside the loft only ever gets the bit between the rafters. The residue stays, the surveyor can still see it, and the timber that was hidden before is still hidden. Taking the covering off is the only way to get all of it, and it is the only way anyone gets to look at the rafters underneath, which is the entire point of the job.

What came out of the roof

Foam came off in sheets and lumps and went straight into bulk bags. There is always more of it than people expect, and it does not compress. Every bag went off site as part of the job rather than appearing as an extra at the end. With the covering off we went over every rafter, purlin and batten while they were in plain sight, and photographed them.

What went back on

A roof that has had foam on it has had no ventilation for years, so that was the thing to put right on the way back up. Breathable membrane across the whole roof, new treated battens set to the right gauge, then the covering back on with a dry verge. The loft breathes again, every timber is visible, and the work carries our 10-year workmanship guarantee.
